"The social impacts resulting from H&M's investment will improve the lives and futures of the children and the communities in which they live."
Tim Hunter, UNICEF
Tamil Nadu, India
Since 2009, we have worked to improve the livelihood of children in cotton producing areas in Tamil Nadu, India. The region has about 62 million inhabitants of which 17 million are children and it is one of the world`s largest producers of cotton. Despite good economic progress, caste and gender related poverty remains and child labour and trafficking occur.
Cotton is the raw material we use most to make our clothes but other than with the suppliers who manufacture our clothes and accessories we do not have direct business relations with cotton farmers. By cooperating with partners like UNICEF we can however contribute to significant improvements in this community.
The five year project targets 1.2 million children with special focus given to the about 300,000 most vulnerable children aiming to prevent the causes of child labour, provide education and improve access to health care and good nutrition.
